KARATE IN MUSIC CLASS??
Recorder Karate is a program that we use here at TVEC to take students step by step through the learning process as they attempt to play the recorder. For every new skill and new song mastered they earn a "Recorder Karate Belt" which is tied around the bottom of the recorder. Students can earn all 9 belts through their 3rd and 4th grade years. To earn a belt students must utilize their practice time in school and at home. During class time all students will individually perform the song for the teacher as well as understand the required concepts in order to receive their karate belt. Students will also be given supplemental songs to help enhance their playing experience.

THE LEARNING NEVER STOPS!

Once students achieve their black belt, they are then given a packet of supplementary songs called "Challenge Belt Songs". These songs were chosen to extend the learning and musical skills of those students who have soared through their belts.

IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT ALL STUDENTS HAVE THEIR RECORDERS AT SCHOOL ON MUSIC DAYS.

Students have the option to either take the recorder home and bring it back on their designated days, or to leave it in the music room in their classroom bin. Though practicing is expected, having the recorder on music days does take precedence.

STUDENT PACKETS
All students receive the "Recorder Karate" song packet at the beginning of the year. It is the student's responsibility to take care of and be responsible for the music packet. Replacement packs will not be issued. A suitable folder for music storage is strongly recommended.

RECORDER CARE

Students are often reminded during music class that playing the recorder, or any instrument for that matter, is a responsibility. All students are responsible for the care of their own recorder. Treating it with respect is essential. In addition, students are given a cleaning rod with the Suzuki recorder package ordered through the school. Though this can work in a pinch, it is not always the most thorough cleaning method. Occasional soap and water cleaning is recommended. Another alternative is to place the recorder on the top rack of the dishwasher. In either case please remember to let the recorder dry fully and to remove the bottom "bell" of the recorder with the karate belts on it so as to keep the belts dry.

RECORDER REPLACEMENT

If a recorder breaks halfway through the year it is the student's responsibility to replace that recorder. This can easily be done by visiting any local music store and asking to purchase a "Soprano Recorder."
